Some insights from Andre Mistier about “Lost My Way”
The Inspiration:
This song is about accepting faults and weaknesses. Early in my adult life, I spent a while focusing on self-development, and really thought I had gotten somewhere. In fact, I had grown and explored in some ways but had written off other, more vulnerable, directions of self-inquiry. To find later that I had so much more to learn and confront was challenging. Love was the true motivator- to be worthy of the love I was being offered I had to face my deeper fears, places I had no tools to know how to confront yet.
The Process:
After writing this song in a rehearsal on a rooftop, it took me a long time to get the production right. I worked with a number of mixers and producers, but never got it quite right. Partway through my current production series, I decided to look at this one again. At the time I was listening to “cenote” by sainte vie and felt inspired by it. It was a very fast process to get it sounding right from there. The third verse was the last piece to click in, with some inspiration and insight from my wife.
The Setting:
During this song, Aren, our protagonist, hears of a sacred fire that gives wisdom to those who sit by it. Wise men come from all over the universe to make the pilgrimage to sit in its light. Intrigued, Aren makes the pilgrimage. When he gets there, he discovers that the fire is actually false, that the truth is in the darkness around the fire, but that the wise men can’t see it, blinded by the light. That what really needs to be seen is what the light has hidden.
